when your family comes to boston…

I am feeling all the warm and fuzzy feelings that one feels when they are going to see their family soon. Because I am ! Because they are coming HERE tomorrow!

!!!!!!

We mostly always keep our plans loose when my mom and dad come into town, which is a nice and stress-free way to roll, but I’ve also got a few ideas up my sleeve for our weekend in and around Boston…

I was thinking definitely a trip to Somerville Theatre to see The Great Gatsby. {If anyone knows my love for Leo, it’s my mom and dad. They were shelling out the big bucks to me when I went to see Titanic upward of 7 times when I was thirteen years old. I wish I could say I was kidding, BUT I’M SERIOUS.}

I was also thinking Orchard House. Because, well, Little Women! FAVORITE! And also, I have never ever been. I think my mom will love it.

And! We have been planning a trip up to Rockport for our “better late than never” mother’s day brunch at one of our favorite restaurants on Bearskin Neck, My Place By the Sea. I especially can’t wait to get up there since loving on Melanie’s post earlier this week! YAY!

Any other must-dos? Anything you love to do when your family is in town that can’t be missed?

Tell me your favorite things! I love hearing ideas from you guys.

Happy almost Friday! Happy almost 3-day weekend!

  1. How fun, Anna! My parents just went back to Brazil last week after almost a month here with me. So right now I am at the other end- missing them and finding the house super empty… :( But I’m happy for you and looking forward to reading your post about your adventures with them! :)

    • I bet is was so special to have them visit for so long! What great memories you’ll always have!

  2. We basically always try to hit up as many bookstores and favorite restaurants as possible. =) BUT, I’ve been just dying to visit Orchard House…please go and then write a lovely post about it, and then I’ll definitely go too!

    Have SO much fun!

    • I hope I can! I hope it isn’t raining terribly, but if it is I shall I pretend I am Jo, running through the rain to Professor Bhaer. SO ROMANTIC, GAH!

  3. If you have time for lunchies, Gourmet Dumpling House in Chinatown for the juicy pork dumplings AND EVERYTHING ELSE. That’s mah jam for when Mama Sandy comes to town. And, you know, every other time I’m in Chinatown gettin’ down with mah peeps.

    I’ll stop now.

  4. When my mom visits she usually takes the check wherever we eat so I always try to get us to Neptune Oyster in the North End.* I think that Rockport idea is a good one (Bearskin Neck?? nevaheardofit but I want to go now!)

What about a fun champagne cocktail at Saloon in Davis before/after the Gatsby?

MFA is free this weekend, but probably super crowded, right? Maybe ice cream at a crazy-flavor Boston speciality place, like Christina’s or Toscanini’s?

these are just starting to sound like date night ideas…

*If you do end up in the North End, a new bakery called “bread and butter” is opening up tomorrow.

    • You must go to Bearskin Neck! You must! And go to Molly’s ice cream while you’re there. Delicious.

Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions! I love them all.

  5. 17!!!!! damn girl – that is dedication. i love it.

    • OMG! 7!!!!! I saw it 7!

That is a serious typo if there ever was one. AHHH! But I did love it enough to maybe see it that many times if I had been crazy enough. HA!

  6. I am SO glad you posted this! My aunt is coming to town in July and I’ve been trying to think of places she’d like – I had no idea Orchard House was open to the public and so close! (Living in Boston but from Seattle originally). Sounds perfect for her! For things right in Boston, I’d suggest the SOWA handmade/vintage/farmer’s market in the South End on Sundays (fun to browse even if you don’t buy, and lots of yummy unique food trucks to sample! Roxy’s Grilled Cheese is my fave.), or a lobster roll at Sullivan’s in South Boston. There’s a big park and you watch planes fly crazy low over you before they land at Logan.

Please let us know where else you take them :)

    • Oh, yes! Thank you for the Sullivan’s suggestion!

And SOWA is THE BEST. I think my mom would totally love that, too, although I’m not sure we’ll have time because Sunday is the day we’re heading up to the North Shore!

  7. I totally recommend the Orchard House. I’ve lived most of my life in NH, only a mere state away, and I took my mother last year and it was the first time both of us had been there. We loved it!

  8. Oooh fun—sounds like a party!! James is a H-U-G-E Leo fan.. pretty much the only reason he liked Gatsby!! And we just watched Titanic twice in a row last weekend and wept terribly (..because we just have SO MUCH time to watch Titanic twice in a row?!). So good. And so was that typo!

  9. Ali Herter says:

I don’t have any recommendations of where to go but I do know your fam ALWAYS has fun when you’re all together!

Must say one thing…..THIS PICTURE KILLS ME. The cuteness of the whole thing is AMAZING. Your Dad’s hair. The way his arm is around your Mom. Your dress.

    There are no words.

  10. My family is coming to visit this weekend, too!!! I was SO hoping for a beautiful beach day to go to Crane, Russell Orchard, and Clam Box, but I fear we’ll be rained out. I’ve also got SOWA, MFA, and Puritan & Co. on the list. YAY for family visits!!!

  11. Those sound like some seriously fun plans! My family is coming down this weekend too! But for my cousin’s wedding, so there won’t be time to do too much else. I love seeing my family and I hope you enjoy your time with your parents!!!

P.S. I am also dying to see Great Gatsby. I’ve heard mixed reviews, so I feel like I can go into with an open mind and that is really my favorite way to see a movie! Enjoy!

P.P.S. OH and the Little Women house?! THAT’S IN MY TOP 5 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME (I must confess I have never read the book)! I cannot wait to see your pictures!!!!!!!

  12. Ah sounds so fun. I can’t recommend anything you don’t already know about – South End, North End basically… Enjoy it all!!! Can’t wait for the pictures.

  13. ORCHARD HOUSE! I AM SO SO JEALOUS.

What a sweet and perfect weekend. I feel like parent time is sometimes a little life refresher that reminds us of how great it was to be little.

I saw Titanic five times in the theater and pre-ordered the VHS so I could get the poster for free and gaze longingly at Leo all the days of my life. I GET IT, GIRL. Though my love for Leo waned over the years, I still enjoyed Gatsby twice and thought he still looks great.

  14. My family’s visits to Chicago always revolve around eating. We like to cook together, eat out together, picnic together, and even do the food shopping together (when it’s somewhere fun!). Enjoy the time with your family!

  15. i don’t know what you’re talking about, titanic was ONLY meant to be watched in multiples of three, girl! YAY FOR MOMMAS DAY BRUNCHES! have fun with your ‘rents, love! i can think of no better boston tour guide than you!

  16. Hope you have a great weekend! Say hi to them for me!!!

  17. I think that “Because, well, Little Women!” is an excellent reason for so many things! I’m still catching up on the blog, but from Twitter/Instagram it looked like a fab visit :)

  18. OMG. My love for Titanic knew no bounds back in the day. I should thank my parents for funding the obsession as well!

I hope you had a great visit with the family!
