a book list // my favorite summer reads

Did you have a nice fourth of July? We hung around here and spent the morning out in Lincoln on the Sudbury River {beauty! and refreshing!} and then took the train into the city to watch the fireworks from a friend’s roof deck in Beacon Hill. I might be biased, but Boston’s fireworks are GLORIOUS. THEE best I’ve ever seen. And the Pop’s playing along? Well there’s nothing better than that. Something about those patriotic songs just give me the chills. Good old fashioned America. Love this land.

And now, a book list for you! Because a few friends have been asking about books lately, I thought I’d just make a summer favorites list. These are books I have read and loved and think they’d be perfect for a trip to the beach or a lounge on a hammock swing.

Tried and true, I’d recommend these to anyone. They are all terrific.favorite-summer-reads

Summer Sisters // The Help
The Time Traveler’s Wife // Where’d You Go Bernadette?
Anne of Green Gables // Divergent

  1. I was invited to a roof top in Beacon HIll – and now I’m wondering if it was the SAME rooftop and I totally missed my chance to hang out with you. Time Traveler’s Wife and The Help are two of my favorites. I always recommend “The Mercy of Thin Air” as a great read. Miss you!

    • The roof top next to us had a lot of people! I could see you being in that mix, so wouldn’t that have been fun?!

I have never heard of The Mercy of Thin Air… I’ll have to look it up and add it to my list.

      MISS YOU TOO!

  2. Oh, I used to LOVE Anne of Green Gables. Really thinking I should read it again as an adult.

  3. Great list! Anne of Green Gables ALWAYS makes me cry. always. Did you ever see the TV movie from the 80s? It was one of my favorites- and then of course it became the offshoot series “Avonlea” on vintage Disney Channel.. Ok i’m really dating myself here!
Lately I’ve been recommending “Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore” which you might enjoy :)

  4. I’m reading A Long Fatal Love Chase by Louisa May Alcott and it’s very good so far! I love that it’s a pretty easy read, but not SO easy that I finish in an hour and need a new book. I’m excited to check out some of the books on your list. I’m really trying to read more “real” things and less internet/iPad things! :)

  5. PHEW! Thanks friend!! I needed some of your fabulous reccomendations! Keem ’em coming if you read any other good ones this summer!? xoxox

    • Just finished “I Feel Bad About My Neck” by Nora Ephron… she also wrote the screenplays for You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and “When Harry Met Sally”!

It was SO GOOD. You need to read it.

  6. Summer Sisters is always one of my favorite summer reads too! And I lovedddd Where’d You Go, Bernadette. So smart, and so different!

    • I knew Alex would comment about Summer Sisters :) It really is such a classic summer book, planning on giving it another read this year too! And AH I keep hearing about Divergent, must get on that one!

  7. Hi, can i ask you something? You seem to know a lot about children books and illustrations. The thing is, I’m looking for children books with “scary” animal illustrations like the big bad wolf (or a fox) eating pigs (or seven kids or Red Riding hood or birds in Chicken Little) or being pictured with a fat stomach. Could be any other animal as well. I need it for my research. Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  8. Love these all! Except haven’t yet read Where’d You Go, Bernadette…now it’s on my list…and somehow I just know I’ll love it. =)

Hope you had a happy 4th…Miss you!

  10. i read the help last summer – so good! i need to get the bernadette book, everyone loves it!

  11. Love this summer reading list! I also read Where’d You Go, Bernadette and loved it! I just picked up This One Is Mine by Maria Semple as well – can’t wait to dig in, she’s just such a funny author!

  12. I loved Anne of green gables! I’ve been terrible about reading this summer — your list is inspiring me!!

  13. I really want to read Anne of Green Gables and can’t believe I missed out on it as a kid. As someone who’s been reading her whole life I’d like to know exactly what I was reading back then, because I missed out on all the good stuff! (i.e. Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, Anne, etc.) But The Help and The Time Traveler’s Wife were such good books. Two of the best summer reads out there. Good picks!

  14. I cry every time I read the Time Traveler’s Wife! have you read The Memory Keeper’s Daughter? maybe it’s the titles, but I always think of them together and love them the same.

  15. LOVE these summer picks! I haven’t read Summer Sisters, so I’m putting that one on my list!

  16. Where’d You Go Bernadette keeps popping up on my radar, to the extent that I’ve recommended it to other people…without having read it myself. Is that even allowed? Probably not. (Also, Matt said that “she’d be a kindred spirit!” isn’t a good enough reason to name our future, hypothetical child Diana. Ridiculous.)

  17. I just finished ” Me Before You” by Jojo Moyes…. so so so good! You’ll laugh, cry, and want to see what happens next!
