the day I learned to weave.

Last weekend I treated myself to something I’ve been wanting to learn for a very long time. I took a weaving class! I’ve been admiring the craft from afar over the course of the past year and when Maryanne Moodie posted about her beginning weaving class in Brooklyn I immediately signed up. Lickity split! And I am so thankful I did. I convinced my sister to sign up too (hooray!) and we made a day of it. We drove down to Connecticut on Friday night to stay at my grandmother’s house and then headed into Brooklyn in the morning. The class took place right in Maryanne’s Industry City studio, which I thought was amazing! So inspiring to learn in the space where MM makes her magic! It was so bright and cozy, I just loved every minute of it.

We were treated to snacks and champagne! My favorite is the tray of nuts that resembles a weave. Perfect!

Maryanne is absolutely the loveliest. I could listen to her voice for hours {Australian accent, yes!} and she is truly a wonderful teacher. She began the class by telling us a little bit about her background and how she came to love weaving, and then went through each step and technique of working on the loom clearly and methodically so it was easy to understand. She also encouraged us to take videos, which were SO helpful to me later.

A lap loom is the type of loom that you would usually get when taking a beginning weaving class, but the small looms did not come in time for our group so we were able to use these larger stand looms instead and then purchase them at the wholesale price if we wanted. The other option was to wait for the smaller loom to come in the mail. I decided to get the larger one in hopes that I will try some bigger projects someday!

The photo above is my weaving progress by the end of the class. I was so glad there was some pink yarn to work with. Favorite! I tried my hand at basic tabby, Rya knots (love) and loops. We also learned how to Soumak which I didn’t do during the class but I did try later at home. It’s so fun to think about all the creations you can make by just knowing a few easy weaving techniques— and that’s exactly what it is! Easy! I might try some shapes on my next weave. They look like they would be hard, but really they aren’t. Patience and time is all you need. Plus it is relaxing to no end.

And! One week later… my first finished weave!

I am so so happy with it.

I went to Michael’s to pick out some more yarn and just sort of added loops and Soumaks here and there until I was please with the look of it. Sometimes I took weavings out if I didn’t love it. Mostly I just kept going, adding a little bit here and there each night until it was finally complete. Oh, how good it felt to take it off the loom and admire it on the wall.  So glad! So pretty! And so excited to start my second! :)

weekends like these.

columbus day weekend

I love weekends like this one… the nothing planned, three-day variety. The little bit of sleeping in here, a trip to the beach there, nothing-on-your-to-do-list-but-you-get-everything-done kind of weekend. Yes, those. I love them!

On Saturday I took myself on a day date of sorts. Zan was working all day, so I drove myself to Cambridge for coffee and lunch and shopping. It was the loveliest. I really wanted to try out Loyal Nine {my latte was delicious!} and since Clover was a few blocks away of course I couldn’t not help myself to a Chickpea Fritter. IT IS MY JAM! Then, I headed over to visit Loyal Supply Co., a shop I have been meaning to visit for forever! From everything I’d heard and seen I knew I would be in heaven there. And I was!

I seriously wanted everything in the store — those wire baskets! The honey! The ceramic pottery! It was everything pretty and so many things practical and I will absolutely be visiting again soon.

I also stopped at Ricky’s Flower Market because I love that place a lot. I love to walk up the ramp to the garden shop where it’s like a warehouse greenhouse. Huge windows and all kinds of greenery to choose from. I picked up some new succulents like I always do, and an airplant. My very first!

{How amazing is PL’s new bed? I found it on Etsy here and my mom gifted it to me/us as a birthday present. I want to get her another one for Christmas! And a collar too!}

Saturday night we hung out with PennyLane and binged on episodes of the Walking Dead. Since we don’t have cable we have been working our way through season 5, which just came out on Netflix. We hardly watch any TV over here but this is one show we love. It is so disgustingly bad, but also it is SO SO GOOD.

Saturday morning I walked Penny while Zan slept in and then we headed up to the North Shore to one of our most favorite spots, Rockport and Gloucester. We ate lunch at the Blue Lobster on Bearskin Neck and then took little PL to the beach. Beautiful blue skies and a nice temperature for October. This fall has been glorious, hasn’t it?columbus day weekendcolumbus day weekend

This shop is Lula’s Pantry on Bearskin Neck…. it’s got all sorts of fun knick-knacks and they have the best outlook onto Rockport Harbor from their back deck. It’s how I got that sweet photo of Motif No. 1 above!

A favorite place… forever!

After the North Shore we came home to watch the football game, or really, Zan watched while I worked on dinner and laundry with Penny. Sunday night football is seriously my favorite even if I hardly watch a minute of it. Ha! I love having the TV on and working on this and that around the house. It just feels relaxing and happy to me. Another point for you, Fall. :)

We also picked up a new, bigger crate for PL on Sunday. Her old one was smaller and getting cramped, but her new one is like a luxury hotel. She obviously thinks so too because this is how I found her sleeping when I woke up this morning. Too good, right? I’m so glad I captured it.

And today! Today I woke up early to go grocery shopping for all the fixings for pulled pork {I decided on this recipe by Sherri Lynn — thanks for the tip, Colleen!}. I’ve been so excited to try out our new Crock Pot and today seemed a good a day as any to give it a whirl. I got dinner going and ready before 9 AM {FELT LIKE SUPER WOMAN}, brought PennyLane to the groomers, did a little J.crew shopping :) , and then successfully turned over all my drawers and closets from spring/summer clothes to fall/winter. Bitter sweet, always, but also so refreshing. A clean slate and I am pumped about it.

Now I’m just waiting for Zan to come home, and the pulled pork to finish. I’m about to go cook up some sweet potato fries and put my sweatpants and slippers on and get cozy cozy cozzzyyyy. I’m so glad I could take the time to stop in here and get some memories down. My beloved blog! My record of things! Forever and ever I will love it so.

on my birthday.

Anna {dear friend blog}

Hi! How are you? I hope you’re doing fine.

I’m in a busy season of life, I think. Turns out the year you get engaged and get married and travel on a three week honeymoon to Europe AND get a puppy is one for the busy books. Who knew right? But oh, it’s been a dream!

And wouldn’t you know, today is my birthday! We always make a celebration out of these sort of happenings over here. It’s probably so cliche to say this was the best year yet, but, honestly it was. It absolutely was. And 32? Well, I’m ready for it. The start of another year is so exciting and curious! What kind of surprises will this year bring? Would it also be cliche to say I think it might keep getting better? That each passing year is more divine than the last? Because that’s true as well. How could it not be? At least that’s what I believe to be so. I have more memories than ever, from all the years and all the moments, all bottled up and carried around in my soul. Piling more and more in my heart with each passing month, day, year, second. Surely getting older is the most amazing thing to celebrate. Surely getting older is collecting all the good you’ve had, and the promise of what’s to come.

Last night we stayed up making red velvet bundt cake, so today we can eat it. In the morning we’ll wake up early and have Eggs Benedict and walk the puppy. I’m packing peanut butter and jelly with potato chips for lunch {because it’s my favorite} and tonight we’ll have family over for tacos. I’ll give my class an extra recess {just because!} and wear a favorite dress and buy myself some flowers. I’ll call my mom to tell her that I love her, and wish her a happy birthday too!– I was born on her birthday all those years ago and it’s one of the very best things I could think up to share. I love you mom, to the stars and beyond, and I hope your day all that you wish. ♥♥♥

Today is going to be a good day. And thirty-two is going to be great. ♥

cheers!

spring!spring!spring!spring!spring!

Last weekend while I was visiting New York City we took a walk through Central Park to Shakespeare’s Garden, the loveliest little oasis you could imagine. This tree was right in the center and I could hardly take my eyes off the blooms— they were like heaven! I have about 30 photos just like these and it took all my strength not to post them all.

Happy sigh.

It seems as if spring has really sprung. Let the earth rejoice and be glad!
