PW’s buttermilk biscuits

This past weekend I took on a project. I like to call it the PW project. Over Christmas, picked up a copy (and not just any copy, a signed copy) of The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl. I have been dreaming about this cookbook for awhile now. Partly because I want to make the food, but also partly because The Pioneer Woman, is like, the coolest woman EVER.

So I decided that this was the weekend I was going to try out her yummy looking buttermilk biscuits. Cause if there’s one thing I love for breakfast, it’s buttery biscuits.

Come with me on my journey…

First, get all your ingredients ready. Your “cast of characters” as PW likes to put it.

Keep your butter cold. That’s the way it’s supposed to be for making biscuits.

Make sure to follow your recipe. Cause biscuits aren’t easy. They are tricky, tricky, tricky.

Start by pouring your dry ingredients into a large bowl. Oh, and pre-heat that oven to 450 degrees.

Add the butter and shortening. Yes, I know what you must be thinking. But let’s indulge a little here. It’s a Sunday morning. As for the mixing, PW says you can use a pastry blender, but I’m not that fancy so I used two knives.

Pour in your buttermilk…

And fold with a fork until still a little sticky (not dry, not crumbly).

It should look something like this. I’m showing you these pictures so you can get an idea of what yours should look like, should you decided to take on this project yourself. Also, truth be told, I’m obsessed with my new camera.

Then you flour a clean surface, and roll out the dough… not too thin, not too thick.

I got a new french rolling pin from Crate and Barrel via a gift certificate from one of my students. It’s AWE-some. And it makes me just that much more awesome in the kitchen. Trust me.

After your dough is rolled out you can cut your biscuits with a biscuit cutter. Which didn’t seem to exist at C&B, so I bought this little number instead. Works like gold.

After that they’re ready to go into the oven. 11-14 minutes or until golden brown. I think I cooked mine a tad bit too long. But they were still dang good.

Truly terrific! Spreading butter on top is simple and delicious. Raspberry jam is equally (if not more so) yummy as well. They also make a perfect place to put an egg sandwich. Yes. Oh yes.

Hope you make these someday! They’re sure wonderful.

SNOW DAY!!!

A snow day is one of the best gifts in the world. It’s practically as wonderful as Christmas. I was especially lucky enough to find out tonight that I have a snow day tomorrow. Now that is a real treat. This means that I can sleep in tomorrow morning without a care in the world while the snow flakes fall, fall, fall outside my window. I am already formulating a plan in my head with all things I can do on my day off.

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

1. Get up around 7:30. No need to sleep the day away, people. These are precious work-free hours to savor.

2. Watch the Today Show and Ellen. This will sure be a treat. I love these shows and usually I leave my apartment far to early to watch even a second of Katie, Matt, Anne, and Al. It’ll be so nice to see them again.

3. Brace the snow and head to the store to pick up some supplies for a food project. What will I make? Cookies? Soup? Bread? Only time will tell. I’m seated here in my bed with more cookbooks than I can comfortably carry, ready to take a peak at them before I head off to dreamland.

4. Cook the early afternoon away.

5. Take some pictures of the winter wonderland.

6. Shovel out my car. (Boo to this part.)

7. Make hot chocolate and cozy up with a good book!

Hooray for a snow day! What’s your favorite way to spend one?

comfy madewell look…

I am loving this look from Madewell right now. So comfy cozy. Love the scarf. Love the sweater. Love the shorts. LOVE IT ALL. The shorts especially though, because I feel like I have some version or another of the other pieces, but the shorts are unique. I am totally picturing them with a navy and white striped three-quarter shirt, gold j.crew long necklace, and white scarf. ADORE.

Oh, winter, I am so over you. Summer, you’re my everything.

a rockin’ new years…

So I know it’s the 10th of January, and this is coming a bit late, but better late than never right? This year for New Years Eve, Zan, Meg, our good friend Andrea, and I made a plan to go to The Liberty Hotel in Beacon Hill. It was truly a top notch choice for one of the most talked-up nights of the year.

Meg’s boyfriend, Josh, works at the Liberty and so we were able to get tickets easily (and free too!). What a perfect place to spend New Years Eve. Oh so posh. The theme was a masquerade ball, so we got all dressed up, put on some glamour masks, and headed to the party. SO FUN!

Starting the celebration off with a little vintage bubby…

Shortly after the ball dropped I, in true Nanner fashion, dumped out all the contents of my purse. Clearly, I felt a dance was appropriate. Of course!

An excellent time had by all! I know I’ve already said this, but I’m saying it again… Happy New Year!

Hope yours is going well so far!
