a visit to Studio Carta.

The weekend before we left for our vacation I was lucky enough to spend the afternoon visiting Studio CartaAngela Liguori’s amazing ribbon and stationary studio in Brookline. My friend Rachael introduced me to her work a few years ago and I have been a huge fan ever since. Once or twice a year she opens up her studio doors and hosts a day long pop-up shop of sorts, inviting other makers from in and around Boston to showcase their work as well. This was my second time going to one of her open studio days and I absolutely love them. Angela’s husband is always there serving espresso and it’s a perfect delight to talk to Angela and meet the other small business owners sharing her space for the day. I always pick up a letterpress card or two {this time from Of Note Stationers which I LOVE} and also always some ribbons. The ribbons I purchased this visit I hope to incorporate into one of my next weavings. I think they’ll add such a unique touch!

the day I learned to weave.

Last weekend I treated myself to something I’ve been wanting to learn for a very long time. I took a weaving class! I’ve been admiring the craft from afar over the course of the past year and when Maryanne Moodie posted about her beginning weaving class in Brooklyn I immediately signed up. Lickity split! And I am so thankful I did. I convinced my sister to sign up too (hooray!) and we made a day of it. We drove down to Connecticut on Friday night to stay at my grandmother’s house and then headed into Brooklyn in the morning. The class took place right in Maryanne’s Industry City studio, which I thought was amazing! So inspiring to learn in the space where MM makes her magic! It was so bright and cozy, I just loved every minute of it.

We were treated to snacks and champagne! My favorite is the tray of nuts that resembles a weave. Perfect!

Maryanne is absolutely the loveliest. I could listen to her voice for hours {Australian accent, yes!} and she is truly a wonderful teacher. She began the class by telling us a little bit about her background and how she came to love weaving, and then went through each step and technique of working on the loom clearly and methodically so it was easy to understand. She also encouraged us to take videos, which were SO helpful to me later.

A lap loom is the type of loom that you would usually get when taking a beginning weaving class, but the small looms did not come in time for our group so we were able to use these larger stand looms instead and then purchase them at the wholesale price if we wanted. The other option was to wait for the smaller loom to come in the mail. I decided to get the larger one in hopes that I will try some bigger projects someday!

The photo above is my weaving progress by the end of the class. I was so glad there was some pink yarn to work with. Favorite! I tried my hand at basic tabby, Rya knots (love) and loops. We also learned how to Soumak which I didn’t do during the class but I did try later at home. It’s so fun to think about all the creations you can make by just knowing a few easy weaving techniques— and that’s exactly what it is! Easy! I might try some shapes on my next weave. They look like they would be hard, but really they aren’t. Patience and time is all you need. Plus it is relaxing to no end.

And! One week later… my first finished weave!

I am so so happy with it.

I went to Michael’s to pick out some more yarn and just sort of added loops and Soumaks here and there until I was please with the look of it. Sometimes I took weavings out if I didn’t love it. Mostly I just kept going, adding a little bit here and there each night until it was finally complete. Oh, how good it felt to take it off the loom and admire it on the wall.  So glad! So pretty! And so excited to start my second! :)

Feels Like Home by Anna | dear friend on Steller Stories

If you click on the link above you can view a little tour of our living/dining room that I posted on Steller Stories today. I am so happy with the way the room came out. I feel like I’ve finally found my design style– and at last it feels just right. I have always loved interior decorating and design. Even as a little girl I would pour over home magazines and architecture layouts inside the books at Barnes and Noble. It’s just always been so fun to see the different ways people style their homes. My style has definitely evolved over the years, and I’d like to think I’m at my best stylist version of me yet. Every night I walk through the rooms of our house and sing, this place is my favorite, happiness in a home.

A little more on Steller: I discovered the Steller app last April {my first story was about the Golden Gate Bridge!) and then rediscovered it yesterday, and well, if you don’t know it yet, you should because it’s perfection. Such a simple idea with great layout options and clean simple fonts to add the details to your project— a new way of story telling through words, photos, and videos. I love it and I think you will too.

You can buy the Steller app in the app store to start creating your own, or find out more about it here. <— Be sure to view some of the featured stories while you’re over there. So many amazing stories! SO inspiring!

What a great time I had at the Fox Hole Pop-Up on Saturday!

This event was put on by a few of my favorite Boston creatives AND favorite instagrammers. Yes, yes!— I met these girls through social media– a trend that’s hardly a novelty anymore these days, but one that still kind of blows my mind sometimes.

Meet {and follow!} Lauren, Krissy, and Cambria Grace. All the nicest, honestly. : )

“The Fox Hole” is actually the nickname for where Lauren and her husband live in South Boston. Lauren runs an event planning business, Krissy is the florist behind Boston Pollen, and Cambria is one stellar photographer. Together they make the most amazing team and have put together some really awesome events {see their last one, the Flower Potluck, HERE}. This pop-up was such a fun idea for the season– fall drinks, vintage treasures, decorated pumpkins, gorgeous floral arrangements. And! Boozy coffee and cider to boot. Love me some warm spiked beverages. Absolutely delicious.

I’m so glad I came out for this and so glad to have met these ladies in Boston. Makes the city feel a little bit smaller, and definitely a lot more fun.

Can’t wait for the next event— to which I say, SIGN. ME. UP.
