the first christmas letter.

christmas letter 2015

Happy Christmas, everyone!

Our very first Christmas card! Our very first Christmas letter! Our very first Christmas spent together! It’s all so exciting, I love it. Here’s to what I’m hoping is an annual tradition— an update of sorts and a wish for the happiest of New Year’s to one and all. We have had the busiest, most exciting year together yet– An engagement, a wedding, and the cutest puppy you ever did see. :) With the internet these days, and my devoted love for instagram, an old fashioned piece of paper seems hardly necessary, but I have looked forward to writing my own typed letter to friends and family for years and YEARS and so I will begin our tradition right here, right now because dreams are always best when they come true.

Speaking of…. ! We’ll start this letter off on the very eve of the New Year, 2014. Zan and I made plans to head into the city for Boston’s First Night before we’d be hosting our own New Year’s party with family close to home. While walking through the Public Garden, Zan surprised me (yes, very much surprised me!) with a beautiful diamond ring. We celebrated eight and a half years together with the promise of forever and I cannot remember a party so joyful.

From there our days were thrilling and b-u-s-y. We knew the way you just know that summer is our season, and so we set the date for June. Six months to sign seal and deliver and we did it with sparklers to boot! I had the best time planning our day, from designing the invitations with my Aunt Heidi to dress shopping with my mom and Meg. I printed (almost!) every single piece of paper on our home computer, and spent plenty of hours with the paper cutter after school.

If you were at the Mandana Barn that pretty summer day you know that the sky was bright and a little bit drizzly, that flowers were placed in every nook and cranny and that love filled the space like magic. We said our vows under a beautiful (Zan-made!) arbor and danced and danced until the very last chord of “Don’t Stop Believin’. We loved that day and the people who were part of it. The Best Day Ever, the Twentieth of June.

Do you know what happened next? We took ourselves to Europe! 21 days in Italy and Croatia the best company, the best sights, the best food! In Italy: Venice, Rome, and Positano. In Croatia: Dubrovnik, Korcula, Hvar, Plitvice Lakes, the hills of Istria and Rovinj. Our time away was fantastic and overwhelming and exhausting and amazing. Rome was agreeably our favorite, and the water off the coast of Croatia! We have never seen anything so blue. Bitten by the travel bug, we’re already pumped for wherever our adventure will lead us next. Suggestions are always welcome!

August brought us lots more excitement and a little bit of scoundrel when Pennylane Winchell became part of our family. Zan’s aunt Crissy rescued her in L.A. and sent her east to be a companion for Nell’s dog Rue. Except, lucky us! After a weekend in New Hampshire we brought that cutie pup home to our house and can’t imagine it any other way. She’s the sweetest fluffiest little love.

After Summer came Fall and we’re back into the everyday swing of things. We are still living on the 2nd floor of the big house on Summer Street, where I’ve enjoyed creating the coziest space to call home. Zan is doing well and keeping busy at work and I still love teaching those littles– my third year in 2nd grade, having fun every day of the year. On weekends we like to explore, both near and far and every place in between — we spent time in Nantucket, Denver, New Hampshire and the Berkshire’s, Tampa, NYC, Maine, North Carolina and Syracuse, New York! When winter comes we’ll be on the slopes in Vermont, Zan loving the mountains and me, the hot chocolate. :) I can’t say I love the cold but I do love the cozy. Cozy we are and happy we’ll be.

We love you all very much and think about you often. MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY 2016!!

Wishing you the happiest! Lots of love,

Anna and Zan

the day I learned to weave.

beginning weaving with maryanne moodie

Last weekend I treated myself to something I’ve been wanting to learn for a very long time. I took a weaving class! I’ve been admiring the craft from afar over the course of the past year and when Maryanne Moodie posted about her beginning weaving class in Brooklyn I immediately signed up. Lickity split! And I am so thankful I did. I convinced my sister to sign up too (hooray!) and we made a day of it. We drove down to Connecticut on Friday night to stay at my grandmother’s house and then headed into Brooklyn in the morning. The class took place right in Maryanne’s Industry City studio, which I thought was amazing! So inspiring to learn in the space where MM makes her magic! It was so bright and cozy, I just loved every minute of it.

We were treated to snacks and champagne! My favorite is the tray of nuts that resembles a weave. Perfect!

Maryanne is absolutely the loveliest. I could listen to her voice for hours {Australian accent, yes!} and she is truly a wonderful teacher. She began the class by telling us a little bit about her background and how she came to love weaving, and then went through each step and technique of working on the loom clearly and methodically so it was easy to understand. She also encouraged us to take videos, which were SO helpful to me later.

A lap loom is the type of loom that you would usually get when taking a beginning weaving class, but the small looms did not come in time for our group so we were able to use these larger stand looms instead and then purchase them at the wholesale price if we wanted. The other option was to wait for the smaller loom to come in the mail. I decided to get the larger one in hopes that I will try some bigger projects someday!

The photo above is my weaving progress by the end of the class. I was so glad there was some pink yarn to work with. Favorite! I tried my hand at basic tabby, Rya knots (love) and loops. We also learned how to Soumak which I didn’t do during the class but I did try later at home. It’s so fun to think about all the creations you can make by just knowing a few easy weaving techniques— and that’s exactly what it is! Easy! I might try some shapes on my next weave. They look like they would be hard, but really they aren’t. Patience and time is all you need. Plus it is relaxing to no end.

And! One week later… my first finished weave!

I am so so happy with it.

I went to Michael’s to pick out some more yarn and just sort of added loops and Soumaks here and there until I was please with the look of it. Sometimes I took weavings out if I didn’t love it. Mostly I just kept going, adding a little bit here and there each night until it was finally complete. Oh, how good it felt to take it off the loom and admire it on the wall.  So glad! So pretty! And so excited to start my second! :)

weekends like these.

columbus day weekend

I love weekends like this one… the nothing planned, three-day variety. The little bit of sleeping in here, a trip to the beach there, nothing-on-your-to-do-list-but-you-get-everything-done kind of weekend. Yes, those. I love them!

On Saturday I took myself on a day date of sorts. Zan was working all day, so I drove myself to Cambridge for coffee and lunch and shopping. It was the loveliest. I really wanted to try out Loyal Nine {my latte was delicious!} and since Clover was a few blocks away of course I couldn’t not help myself to a Chickpea Fritter. IT IS MY JAM! Then, I headed over to visit Loyal Supply Co., a shop I have been meaning to visit for forever! From everything I’d heard and seen I knew I would be in heaven there. And I was!

I seriously wanted everything in the store — those wire baskets! The honey! The ceramic pottery! It was everything pretty and so many things practical and I will absolutely be visiting again soon.

I also stopped at Ricky’s Flower Market because I love that place a lot. I love to walk up the ramp to the garden shop where it’s like a warehouse greenhouse. Huge windows and all kinds of greenery to choose from. I picked up some new succulents like I always do, and an airplant. My very first!

{How amazing is PL’s new bed? I found it on Etsy here and my mom gifted it to me/us as a birthday present. I want to get her another one for Christmas! And a collar too!}

Saturday night we hung out with PennyLane and binged on episodes of the Walking Dead. Since we don’t have cable we have been working our way through season 5, which just came out on Netflix. We hardly watch any TV over here but this is one show we love. It is so disgustingly bad, but also it is SO SO GOOD.

Saturday morning I walked Penny while Zan slept in and then we headed up to the North Shore to one of our most favorite spots, Rockport and Gloucester. We ate lunch at the Blue Lobster on Bearskin Neck and then took little PL to the beach. Beautiful blue skies and a nice temperature for October. This fall has been glorious, hasn’t it?columbus day weekendcolumbus day weekend

This shop is Lula’s Pantry on Bearskin Neck…. it’s got all sorts of fun knick-knacks and they have the best outlook onto Rockport Harbor from their back deck. It’s how I got that sweet photo of Motif No. 1 above!

A favorite place… forever!

After the North Shore we came home to watch the football game, or really, Zan watched while I worked on dinner and laundry with Penny. Sunday night football is seriously my favorite even if I hardly watch a minute of it. Ha! I love having the TV on and working on this and that around the house. It just feels relaxing and happy to me. Another point for you, Fall. :)

We also picked up a new, bigger crate for PL on Sunday. Her old one was smaller and getting cramped, but her new one is like a luxury hotel. She obviously thinks so too because this is how I found her sleeping when I woke up this morning. Too good, right? I’m so glad I captured it.

And today! Today I woke up early to go grocery shopping for all the fixings for pulled pork {I decided on this recipe by Sherri Lynn — thanks for the tip, Colleen!}. I’ve been so excited to try out our new Crock Pot and today seemed a good a day as any to give it a whirl. I got dinner going and ready before 9 AM {FELT LIKE SUPER WOMAN}, brought PennyLane to the groomers, did a little J.crew shopping :) , and then successfully turned over all my drawers and closets from spring/summer clothes to fall/winter. Bitter sweet, always, but also so refreshing. A clean slate and I am pumped about it.

Now I’m just waiting for Zan to come home, and the pulled pork to finish. I’m about to go cook up some sweet potato fries and put my sweatpants and slippers on and get cozy cozy cozzzyyyy. I’m so glad I could take the time to stop in here and get some memories down. My beloved blog! My record of things! Forever and ever I will love it so.

weekend scheming…

hike the whites

Hooray, horray for another weekend in the works! We’re hoping to go on a day trip tomorrow, but don’t have all the details figured out fully yet. I’m making a case for the Berkshires and I hope I win! We want to head somewhere where Pennylane can tag along, and I’m thinking Bish Bash Falls might be just the place. I’m using both Rachael and Ashley’s itineraries as my guide, and if you know either of their blogs/spirits you know we could never go wrong.

The photo in this post is from this past August when we took our second annual hiking trip to the White Mountains– we did another hut hike and stayed in Greenleaf Hut this time around. I absolutely love doing this hike at the end of each summer and hope we can continue this tradition until we have hit all the huts {and then do them all over again!}.

I hoping this weekend we can do the short hike to the falls, visit an apple orchard, and hit up Rubiner’s and SoCo Creamery. YUM YUM! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

What’s your favorite thing to do in the Berkshires? It seems kind of funny we have been driving through on our way to New York and back for YEARS but we’ve never stopped to have a look. For this weekend we’d just drive out for the day so I think we’ll stick to the Great Barrington area, but would love to hear your favorite places for either this trip or next time!

Have a good weekend wherever it takes you! xo
