The West Coast!

OH! My oh my oh my.

I guess if you’re looking for the short story it’s that I adored every minute. And really, well, it was a dream come true. Because that’s what it was for such a long time. Just a dream that I’d hope I’d experience one day. And so because of that I’m about to tell you the long story, too, if you’ll have it. I’ve spent the last few days figuring out how I want to tell it. And well, tell it, I’m going to. I’m going to tell it all. Every last bit. It’s not going to be quick, but it will be nice on the eyes and hopefully the heart, I’ll promise you that.

I’ve been thinking lately about how lucky I am to have this space. And how much I love it. How this is the place where everything’s put down. Memories stored, pictures tucked away. And that’s pretty good, isn’t it?

{It is, it really is.}

So— here we go… on the trip to the west that was everything. ♥

It might sound silly, but I don’t feel like a person that gets to travel a lot. Sure, I skitter around New England and New York a good amount, but see the world? That’s not really me. I can count on two fingers the times I took a plane out of the country. And two more the times I’ve taken a plane across it. And so, this was kind of a big deal for me. And it was amazing.

I’ll have you know, if I had my way I’d seriously consider leaving my job to travel the world.

Dang those, monies. And those crazy cool kids. ;)

Anyway!

We technically arrived in San Francisco late Friday night but didn’t get our party started officially until Saturday morning. We took the Bart in from the airport and walked through the Mission to our terrific airbnb in Duboce Triable. We loved being over there, a LOT. It was quiet like a neighborhood, but we were also able to walk to so many restaurants/coffee shops/ice cream spots AND! The street cars to anywhere. Which is what we did basically the entire time where were there. We took the street cars to EVERYWHERE.

The first morning we headed downtown to the Ferry Building. We had plans to have lunch with our friends in Sausalito, and so we were able to spend some time at the waterfront before boarding. It was so fun to ride the street car {we opted for that instead of the fast MUNI train} and were able to get a pretty good taste of what the Saturday market is like on the Embarcadero. It’s busy! And there’s so much to see!

These last two views {above} were from the ferry boat to Sausalito– {to be mentioned again in post No.2!} WHAT A CITY. And we’ve only just begun. My thoughts on San Francisco at this point, {3 hours in, ha!} were that it was such a grand place. And honestly, I had absolutely NO IDEA what was in store. I so enjoyed walking slowly through the market, soaking in the sunshine and simply loving the fact that it was our very first morning there.

A whole 9 days ahead of us! Smiles on our faces and not a care in the world.

My ease back into daily life has been, well, fairly easy and breezy which is really, really nice. It is summer vacation for me, after all. Between a bit of tutoring, some summer workshops at school, and finding a place for each of our new gifts, I am finally getting the break I needed after that June crazy. Good crazy, but crazy all the same. This was planned just so, of course. We had two options for wedding dates with our venue– one in the middle of June, and the other at the very end of August. With the August date I would have had a lot more time to plan without the end of the year school stress but the June date would give me more time to reflect and enjoy the memories of it all. And that made the choice incredibly easy.

Right before our wedding Breather contacted me to see if I’d like to try out one of their spaces for a few hours. Breather is a company that rents out gorgeous rooms around the city. You can use the rooms for just about anything your heart desires and can use them for as little or as long as you’d like. I was too busy to even think about giving it a try before the wedding, but was certainly intrigued. I also knew how many photos I would have after our trip. Photos to be sorted and edited and blogged — the perfect reason to test out a Breather space. And perfect timing too because this week has been HOT! With no AC at home it was really nice to get away to someplace cool for a few hours.

There are 5 locations in Boston and I reserved the room at 715 Boylston Street {right across from Lord and Taylor} and my sister and I made an afternoon of it. We picked up some Flour for lunch, brought our laptops along, and mostly just enjoyed the light and bright — we loved it all!

This space in particular is HUGE. I spent some time while we were there brainstorming all the different things you could use it for. Dinner with friends. Craft night. Yoga party. A holiday shindig. I mean, your house is fine for all of these things, but sometimes change is good, you know? I could absolutely see myself reserving a space while visiting NYC {42 locations!!!}, as I often find myself needing a recharge during day trips. Will obviously also need to go back to San Francisco for this gem, and Montreal! DIVINE! Coffee shops are nice, but these rooms are nicer. And perfectly pretty, too!

the very best of 2014

Oh, 2014! You were sweet.

I’ve spent the last few days collecting photos for this post — because this is a year I want to remember, a year I won’t soon forget. I’ve always been a LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST type and this year was no different. We saw the mountains, the cities, the sea. We traveled here and there. We saw friends and family. Visited old places and brand new. This year was GOOD.

In 2014 I picked the word “shine” to focus on throughout the year. I thought about that word constantly and how I wanted to live it. I want to feel the good in every day, I want to take a look around me— to appreciate and notice. I want to savor what I have and enjoy it.

Looking back, I can’t help but smile at how nice it all was (and just keeps getting better)…

We skied in the White Mountains

My high school friends visited Boston

We traveled to Nantucket, Cape Cod, and Martha’s Vineyard

We flew to the West Coast

San Francisco

Big Sur

Seattle

A week full of MAGIC in my memory forever.

We moved! And it is so cozy and good.

Friends, friends, friends.

FAMILY and more friends.

On New Year’s Eve Zan got down on one knee in the Public Garden and asked me to marry him.

The happiest surprise and I said YES.

Oh yes, did this year ever shine.

Canto 6, Jamaica Plain

CANTO 6, Jamaica Plain

I’d like to say I stumbled upon Canto 6 one day, out of the blue, out of nowhere. I’d like to say that I was walking down the street, looking down at my phone like I sometimes do, or up at the sky breathing summer in, and that the smells from this small but perfect bakery caught me by surprise and that I aimlessly wandered in. But that’s not the way it happened. The way it happened is that I gloriously traveled to San Francisco awhile back {you may remember} and that Zan and I searched out Tartine Bakery {because of the recommendations!} and that I posted an instagram of the goodness, and that someone commented that I should try Canto 6, a hidden gem in JP, right in my very own Boston.

And so it happened that I did try Canto 6. I looked it up one day that I was in Jamaica Plain– went back into my sea of instagrams to find the photo, find the comment, just so I could find the bakery.

And you should find it, too.

Perfect pastries, sweet and delicious. An original that’s not to be missed.
