Feels Like Home by Anna | dear friend on Steller Stories

If you click on the link above you can view a little tour of our living/dining room that I posted on Steller Stories today. I am so happy with the way the room came out. I feel like I’ve finally found my design style– and at last it feels just right. I have always loved interior decorating and design. Even as a little girl I would pour over home magazines and architecture layouts inside the books at Barnes and Noble. It’s just always been so fun to see the different ways people style their homes. My style has definitely evolved over the years, and I’d like to think I’m at my best stylist version of me yet. Every night I walk through the rooms of our house and sing, this place is my favorite, happiness in a home.

A little more on Steller: I discovered the Steller app last April {my first story was about the Golden Gate Bridge!) and then rediscovered it yesterday, and well, if you don’t know it yet, you should because it’s perfection. Such a simple idea with great layout options and clean simple fonts to add the details to your project— a new way of story telling through words, photos, and videos. I love it and I think you will too.

You can buy the Steller app in the app store to start creating your own, or find out more about it here. <— Be sure to view some of the featured stories while you’re over there. So many amazing stories! SO inspiring!

around the house…

Processed with VSCOcam

This weekend has been all about doing things around the house. In the summer months it seems to get neglected because we’re hardly ever around, and in the fall the upkeep seems to be pushed to the wayside because of back-to-school. So, now that it’s November I figure it’s finally time to get moving on this house business. This weekend I was determined to get it clean and organized, and also tackle a few projects that I’ve had spinning around in my head for awhile.

My main project was to put up shelves in the office. I have so many prints that I’ve been collecting this year, and now I just need a space to put them all! I debated a gallery wall, kind of like this one, but it seemed in my head like it would be too much work. In the past I’ve placed prints and pictures on long wall shelves, which was my hope for this weekend— to put up the shelves easy peasy and VOILA! Instant update. However, this did NOT go as planned. Long story short there are 4 big holes in my wall right now because I AM NOT MEANT FOR THIS KIND OF THING. Apparently. Zan assures me that we’ll get it done and it will work out just fine, but after two days of frustrating mess-ups, I’ve decided to hand the project over to him/beg him to do it and hopefully I’ll have something to show soon. {Fingers crossed.}

Other projects included de-cluttering my dresser {things seem to get thrown there daily without a care!}, color coding my books, and deep cleaning my kitchen. I also took a trip to Ikea to buy some inexpensive frames— for my prints that have nowhere to go— but at least they’ll be all ready as soon as the shelves are in place. {Again, fingers crossed.}

I think my motivation behind all this cleaning/redecorating is that winter is coming, and with that, a lot of time spent indoors. If it’s going to be cold out, and we’re going to need to stay in and keep cozy, might as well be a space that I LOVE.

about the time I rearranged the bedroom.

A few weeks ago, when Zan was off skiing one Saturday, I decided to take a little time to rearrange the bedroom. I was at the end of my rope with winter and just looking for a change. I always decide to do these sorts of things on a last minute basis. One minute I’m propped in front of my computer waiting for my coffee to finish brewing, and the next, BAM! I’ve gone completely mad and everything is my room is being strewn about.

Why I did this by myself without Zan around to help me I will never know, but it went something like this:

Take all of the drawers out of the dresser, stack them in the dining room.

Collect junk from dresser into a paper bag.

Take the mattress off the bed, lean it up in the kitchen.

Throw all the bedding to the wayside.

Use my super strength to move everything to the opposite side of where it was before.

Rearrange the rug.

Bring in a comfy chair from the study.

Bring back in the dresser drawers.

Put the mattress back on the bed and the bedding all back together.

Admire my handy work.

Take pictures.

Send to Zanner.

Post to instagram.

Proud of myself doesn’t even come close to how I felt. I was elated with our new set-up and my new found love of home handywork. Zan really liked the new change, too. Gave me a pat on the back, told me he was impressed. I must have done something wrong in the moving process though, because as soon as Zan got into the bed it broke and the entire thing came crashing to the floor.

Whoops.

There’s a slight chance I was the cause of that.

{I was most definitely the cause of that.}

It was one of those situations where all you can really do is laugh through the tears. And once you get over the tragedy of breaking your bed, an extended camp-out with your mattress on the ground is actually an okay adventure in the interim.

apartment tour: bedroom

And so today marks the conclusion of the apartment tour. I hope you liked it. I certainly had fun showing it off. It’s work, putting a place together, but for me it’s super fun too. Once at a staff meeting during an “icebreaker” (can’t say that I love those), the question was asked, What would you be if you weren’t a teacher?, and the answer to that is so easy. I would be an interior designer. Grace Bonney would be my boss and I would work and blog at Design*Sponge. DREAM.

I would meet fun people and style homes and apartments with unique ideas and DIY talent.

All the live long day.

But for now, I guess this place will just have to do…

With any place, it’s all about the details you choose to incorporate into the home. What colors do you like? What memories do you hold close? How do you want to spend your evenings after a long day at work? Make your place comfortable and make it reflect you.

Personally for me it’s about color, charm, and attention to detail, which I think I captured just perfectly here in this wonderful apartment. I’m glad to call it home and I’m glad to have shared it with you.

Now who wants to come over for dinner??

Have a great weekend everyone!
