nanner’s boston love list // a favorite guide to my favorite city.

a-boston-love-list

This post first appeared on Hither and Thither for Ashley’s “5 Things” series. I loved writing this guide last year and frequently receive emails requesting a list of my favorite places around town. For this post, I have added a few lot more of my favorite city spots to make this truly my ultimate guide to Boston. :)

//

It’s no secret that Boston is my favorite city. I moved here after graduating college, almost 11 years ago to be exact (!), and I haven’t looked back since. Just 2 hours from Portland, Maine, and even less to parts of the Cape and Rhode Island, you could easily find yourself enjoying a day trip to the beach in the summer or hiking the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the fall. The city of Boston is known for being a walking city– most areas are completely accessible by foot or by train, and if you’re in a pinch, there’s always an Uber around, too. We’ve got great history, the best seafood, and without a doubt, charm and beauty around every corner if you know where to look.

Edited slightly from the original, this guide is divided into 5 sections, EAT, SHOP, STAY, PLAY & LOVE. Throughout I have covered all my favorite neighborhoods and the best things to see and do {in my humble} opinion. The final section, LOVE is a place for me to add those extra special spots that I don’t want you to miss!

EAT:

Neptune Oyster, 63 Salem Street, (617) 742-3474

When in Boston, eating seafood is a MUST. And oysters? The best! Try Neptune Oyster on Salem Street in the North End for the coziest, most delicious dinner on this side of the Charles River. With only a handful of tables and a guaranteed full bar, the wait for this place can certainly be significant, but worth it! Put your name in, walk around Hanover Street, get yourself a canolli (Modern Pastry is my personal favorite) or a drink at Bricco or Lucca, and then come back to Neptune when a seat opens up (they will call you on your cell). Once inside enjoy the warm light and a glass of wine, then decide which oysters to try or any other seafood that may strike your fancy. I highly recommend the buttermilk johnnycake and the hot Maine lobster roll. Oh, everything is just so good! You will love this place.

SHOP:

Follain, 53 Dartmouth St, (857) 284-7078

My favorite place to shop is Boston’s South End, home to many local artisans, small shops, and vintage goods. I always make a stop at Follain when I’m in the area, picking up healthy skin care products in the most gorgeous light spattered space on Dartmouth Street. While you’re in the neighborhood you’ll also love SOWA Open and Vintage Markets, Olives and Grace, and Pioneer Goods. Grab a coffee and a cupcake at The Buttery if you’re around in the afternoon, Picco for a pizza, or a drink at The Beehive while you listen to some Jazz if it’s close to dinnertime. It won’t be hard to see why the South End is such a unique part of the city.

Airbnb — My Boston Wishlist

If I had to choose I would choose to stay in Beacon Hill over any other neighborhood. It is one of the loveliest neighborhoods you’ll find in Boston, and one of the most historic, too. The above apartment interior is my friend Rachael’s, nestled right on Chestnut Street — a place we were lucky enough to stay at last summer while she and her family were out of town. In Beacon Hill you’ll find brick lined sidewalks, gas-lit street lamps, and some of the most gorgeous old brownstones in the city. While you’re there be sure to walk the length of Charles Street (find Acorn Street if you can!), eat a meal at The Paramount, and meander through the Public Garden and Boston Common ending your adventure at Brattle Book Shop, an outdoor book store that’s sure to make you smile.

Hotel Options // If staying in a hotel is more your style, try the Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro or The Liberty Hotel for reasonably priced rates in Beacon Hill. Other well-priced hotels include The Chandler Inn Hotel, Chandler Studios, and The Lenox.

The Verb Hotel by Fenway Park is another option and a sweet one too! I’ve heard amazing things about both the hotel and their restaurant Hojoko. Two new to me places I hope to find myself visiting at some point in 2016!

The Charles River Esplanade, Back Bay, on the banks of the Charles River

Skywalk Observatory, Prudential Center, 800 Boylston Street

Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston Street

There really are endless sights to see while you’re visiting Boston, but my favorite days are those spent walking or biking along the Charles River and a visit to the Boston Public Library. For the best, most stunning views of the city visit the top of the Prudential Tower where the Skywalk Observatory is open daily and can gives you a birds eye view of each neighborhood including Fenway Park and the famous CITGO sign. While you’re visiting the Skywalk stop for a drink in the lounge at the Top Of The Hub for a memory you won’t soon forget. If you do visit the library be sure to step into the Reading Room and if it’s a warm summer day, sitting out in the courtyard with a book is such a happy place to be.

My ease back into daily life has been, well, fairly easy and breezy which is really, really nice. It is summer vacation for me, after all. Between a bit of tutoring, some summer workshops at school, and finding a place for each of our new gifts, I am finally getting the break I needed after that June crazy. Good crazy, but crazy all the same. This was planned just so, of course. We had two options for wedding dates with our venue– one in the middle of June, and the other at the very end of August. With the August date I would have had a lot more time to plan without the end of the year school stress but the June date would give me more time to reflect and enjoy the memories of it all. And that made the choice incredibly easy.

Right before our wedding Breather contacted me to see if I’d like to try out one of their spaces for a few hours. Breather is a company that rents out gorgeous rooms around the city. You can use the rooms for just about anything your heart desires and can use them for as little or as long as you’d like. I was too busy to even think about giving it a try before the wedding, but was certainly intrigued. I also knew how many photos I would have after our trip. Photos to be sorted and edited and blogged — the perfect reason to test out a Breather space. And perfect timing too because this week has been HOT! With no AC at home it was really nice to get away to someplace cool for a few hours.

There are 5 locations in Boston and I reserved the room at 715 Boylston Street {right across from Lord and Taylor} and my sister and I made an afternoon of it. We picked up some Flour for lunch, brought our laptops along, and mostly just enjoyed the light and bright — we loved it all!

This space in particular is HUGE. I spent some time while we were there brainstorming all the different things you could use it for. Dinner with friends. Craft night. Yoga party. A holiday shindig. I mean, your house is fine for all of these things, but sometimes change is good, you know? I could absolutely see myself reserving a space while visiting NYC {42 locations!!!}, as I often find myself needing a recharge during day trips. Will obviously also need to go back to San Francisco for this gem, and Montreal! DIVINE! Coffee shops are nice, but these rooms are nicer. And perfectly pretty, too!

Sweet Caroline! The trees are finally starting to bloom in this city and my mood and energy are literally bursting through the roof. Vitamin D, you luscious luxury, you. Last night we were ever so lucky to be treated to some Red Sox tickets— a sure way to kick off spring if I ever knew one. We spent the night at Fenway with Zan’s brother Erik and his girlfriend Emily and are so thankful they brought us along for the ride. Even though it was DANG COLD! But still! Red Sox in April means spring is here and summer is so close I can almost taste it.

{A L M O S T.}

We watched that grey sky turn cotton candy pink and we sat in the bleachers and sang along with Neil Diamond and cheered with the crowd when the Sox won in the bottom of the ninth. Wahooo, Boston!

This past weekend was such a happy dream. I’ve gotten sleep, gone on errands, typed and printed ALL the envelopes for our wedding invites!, had a jaunt through the city, and overall just feel completely rested and relaxed– a feeling I didn’t know I was missing until I came back to it. I’ve basically been on go-go-go mode for a few months now. And not only that, but the weather was completely starting to bring me down. I always forget that winter last such a long time here. It’s seriously tough on the soul.

I made mental plans to visit Wellesley last week, to pick up some more invitation supplies at Paper Source, and get all stocked up on a few refills at Follain– but also, I have been wanting to go to the Wellesley College Greenhouses, too! I’ve heard it mentioned here and there and last week a favorite instagrammer Elizabeth posted a bunch of photos that really had me needing to go. The promise of greenery and warmth was just too good to pass up, and when it snowed all day on Saturday, well, THE TRIP WAS A MUST.

Wellesley College has both greenhouses and botanic gardens. The temperature in the greenhouses are so wonderful and warm. There is even a tropical room, which was naturally my favorite. When spring and summer decide to come around I’ll have to go back to check out the Botanic Gardens. I bet they are lovely when the flowers are in bloom.

Below are some of the scenes I captured while I was there…

It felt like summer and it was glorious. March magic is real and it exists here.
